Local students recently participated in contests sponsored by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) and congratulations are in order for the top entries.
In January, seventh-grade students in Danette Cantu's class from St. Anthony Catholic School wrote essays on the Canary Islanders and their impact on Texas history. Additionally, fourth graders from Casey Fedako's class at Columbus Elementary and Kelsey Bohuslav's class at St. Anthony's Catholic School submitted artwork for DRT's Republic of Texas Museum in Austin. These creations depicted historical events from Colorado County prior to 1850. The top essays were composed by Jacob Muzny, first place; Reese Sunder - man, second place; and Joshua Newman third place. Prize-winning artwork was created by Kimber Nelson, first place; Catheryn Besch, second place; and Hudson Henneke, third place.
A great deal of research, effort, and creativity went into the finished compo sitions and posters which were judged by the membership of our local DRT chapter, Dilue Rose Harris. All students received certificates with the top three students in each category receiving a local prize. The students' compositions and posters were then forwarded to the district and/or state level for further evaluation and possible awards.
The DRT is the oldest women's patriotic organization in Texas and is dedicated to the preservation and education of Texas history.
