SEALY — The Sealy High School baseball team found home plate when it mattered most to put runs on the board and earn a crunch time victory against Wharton High School March 26 at Tigers Field by a final score of 10-0. The pitching was on point and runs were driv en in when needed to wrap up a win by mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning.
“Pitching wise, Zach Barrientos, he got up there and battled his butt off for us,” said Sealy head baseball coach Teague Kowalski.
“He did a good job staying in the zone. He was dominant with his fastball tonight. He threw strikes and that’s really something that we've been struggling to do.
Simply put, he threw strikes and that really helped. Another thing we’ve been struggling to do is really get the bats going. It was nice to see some guys swinging it well tonight. That's always good to see as well. We executed in the box. Previous games, we had far too many strikeout lookings. Those are non-competitive at bats. We were able to limit those today and that really helped us."
Sealy’s Maurice Wigfall had a monstrous night offensively by scoring runs and knocking them in at the plate as well, along with scoring the run at home on a sui cide squeeze play. "Just practice," Wigfall said on his big outing.
“All the extra hours after prac tice that I do, it's just that. All the stuff that coach helps us to do during practice, it just helps."
The Tigers didn’t score until the bottom of the third inning on a run home from Wigfall af - ter a botched ball at shortstop on a fielder's choice. Sealy then scored five more runs on a pass ball at home, the squeeze bunt, and a bunch of walks to make it 6-0 in the very next inning. They went on to drive a run in for their next at bat before adding three more runs on a bunt that resulted in an RBI and Wigfall's blast to left that scored two more runs en route to a 10-0 win in the bottom of the sixth inning by mercy rule.
