COLUMBUS — The John Everett Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution of Columbus has selected its scholarship winners for 2024. Each year, the chapter gives $600 scholarships to three outstanding Colorado County students. This year the winners are: Talyr Tipton of Columbus High School, Ariana Palacios of Rice High School, and Amy Christen of Weimar High School.
Christen, daughter of Brian Christen and Staci Ulrich, is a senior at Weimar High School. She plans to attend Paul Mitchell the School-Dallas located in Carrollton, to pursue a Cosmetology Master program beginning this summer. Her goal is to one day own and operate her own salon. In her application essay Christen said, “The most important thing to me is comfort and acceptance. No matter who walks in my door, I want them to feel like their best self whenever they leave.” Her high school activities include band, One Act Play, UIL spelling and vocabulary, student council and Ladycat softball manager. Christen is a member of the National Honor Society and also assists at Weimar Elementary with autistic students.
Tipton, daughter of Klent and Juli Tipton, is a senior at Columbus High School. She plans to attend Texas A&M in the fall of 2024 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. She said, “I plan to use my degree to become a Pediatric Physical Therapist. I desire to help children with mobility issues who may be in distress with hopes to better their life.” Tipton’s high school activities and awards include UIL journalism and editorial writing, 4-H photography, National Honor Society, Cardinals for Christ, varsity cheerleader, and she was the 2023 Colorado County Fair Queen. Tipton has also passed six semester courses via Dual Credit with Blinn College.
Palacios, daughter of Jose and America Palacios, is a senior at Rice High School. She plans to attend Wharton Junior College and obtain her degree in Dental Hygiene. Her activities and accomplishments include captain for both volleyball and soccer, the honor roll, Class of 2024 vice president, Future Farmers of America all four years, student council all four years, student council historian 2024 and coaching soccer for the Rice Youth League. In her application essay Palacios wrote, “As part of my career goal within the next 10 years I would like to be a role model or mentor to others with learning disabilities like me. High school organizations are something I will forever cherish because they allowed me to get more involved and grow into the person I am today. They taught me to always be involved in the community and help others.”
Any woman is eligible for membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She must be 18 years of age and descended from a man or woman who served, with unfailing loyalty in the cause of American independence.
