COLUMBUS — The Columbus High School baseball team defeated Rice High School by mercy rule in five innings with a final score of 11-0. The Cardi nals hit the ball well throughout the entire game and also held their own on the defensive end not allowing a run.

"We swung it well," said Co lumbus head baseball coach Kyle Bludau. “Anytime you can get Kuhn on the mound, you know he’s gonna give us a good game. Throw strikes, throw up the zone, and we got to play defense behind him. I thought we swung the bat real well tonight.

We didn’t exactly swing it our best against Edna on Tuesday. I thought we came back and had a really good game swinging the bats."

Columbus senior Trevor Berger kept the offense intact with his performance at the plate, notch ing a triple and also hitting a ball to the left field wall. "They have a lot of trust in me," Berger said on his teammates and the win. “We just got to keep rolling." Rice has been fighting a recent struggle and looks to get back in the win column. “We didn’t play bad," said Rice head base ball coach Lance Mott. “Columbus just hit the baseball tonight.

That’s what good teams do. That’s why they’re district champs.

That’s why they’re gonna make a run to the playoffs. They’ve got good pitching and they got good hitters. For us, we've come a long way since last year. They show up everyday, they battle, but we’re just not quite in Columbus’ league yet. We'll get there. I don't have any complaints. We played good. They were the better baseball team tonight. Can’t be upset about that."

Columbus appeared on the board in their second at bat and scored a run from a double and a base hit from Cade Neumann and Trinity Thompson. They scored four more runs in the bottom of the third inning on Berger’s double and another knock from Neumann to make it 5-0. One more double, a two-run rocket, and another bomb over the centerfield er’s head from Neumann iced the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Cardinals recorded all of their outs by strikeout in the top of the fifth en route to an 11-0 victory.
