ARANSAS PASS — The Spring Conference for District 11 Texas Extension Education Association was held on April 16 in Aransas Pass, with District 11 Director Knellen Quinteros presiding. Following a prayer, there was a moment of silence for recently deceased members. After the opening ceremonies, Marsha Wellmann of San Patricio County gave a welcome. Attending from Austin County with Quinteros were Pat Allee, Joan Buenger, Jessie Kokemor, Shirley Beum and Doris Glenewinkel.
District 11 scholarship winners were announced. First place was Madison Moran of Washington County, and second place was Emma Wiliford of Jackson County. The District 11 Texas Treasure Award went to Marilyn Petrich of Fayette County for her many years of leadership and service.
Certificates were awarded to Austin County TEEA members for their years of service: Annette Balke for 50 years; Buenger, Ver nice Kokemor, and Kokemor for 40 years; Quinteros, Malinda Schramm, and Karen Landrum for 35 years; JoAnn Reichle for 30 years; and Glenewinkel for 20 years. The North Austin TEEA Club was recognized for 40 years of continuing education, leadership development, and community involvement.
Coins for Friendship were collected for the 4-H Center at Brownwood for improvements, and Dollars for Scholars were collected for the scholarship fund.
The main speaker was a Master Gardener from Aransas Pass who talked about native and adapted plants for our part of the state, and the Texas Superstar plants for the various plant hardiness zones in Texas.
In the officer election, Quin teros of Austin County was re-elected District 11 director, Allee of Austin County was re-elected as secretary, and Janice Alexander of Fayette County was elected treasurer. The fall training will be in Victoria.
