COLUMBUS — The Colum- bus Garden Club's Annual Plant & Bake Sale was a grand event as usual with trailers filled with flowers, house plants, veggies and herbs, and trees. The club members also had a variety of gardening tools and accessories, gifts, casseroles, pies, and other home-baked goodies for sale.
Proceeds benefit the many projects in which the club members serve our community including the Visitor Cen- ter Butterfly Garden, Pots and Fall Decorations on the Square, Midtown Butterfly Garden, Live Oak St Rose Garden, Trash Off, holiday decor and serving as docents for Columbus Elementary students to learn about pioneer times in Columbus. Proceeds from the Scholarship Wagon go directly to scholarships for local high school students.
Club members worked for months to prepare for the sale of potting, propagating, and grow- ing plants. They had anazing sup port from three Columbus High School students who are a part of the club's Youth in the Garden program where students can earn service hours for the National Honor Society, Cardinals in Action, and other programs that encourage leadership and provide scholarship opportunities.
The students were Nusaiba Arif, Melanie Cabrera and Stephanie Cabrera. These students and others who participate in the club's youth program have assisted since last October with many projects such as weeding and planting in the gardens around town and cleaning roadways during the Trash Off. Since starting the program last October, the students have contributed a total of 73.25 hours.
The club expresses their appreciaton to the community for their support in buying plants and bake sale items and donating to the scholarship fund. With another successful sale, the club's members turn their attention back to their on gardens and start thinking about the next sale in April 2025.
