ROUND TOP — The Round Top-Carmine High School baseball team won a tight one April 23 at Cubs Field vs Snook High School by a final score of 2-1.
The Cubs scored just enough, but it was the solid pitching that ulti- mately sealed the deal for Round Top. "Some games early in the year have been a struggle,” said Round Top-Carmine head base- ball coach Brock Marburger. "For our guys to put those games behind them and come out here tonight on senior night and do what they did and get the win is a huge deal. Our two guys on the mound, Tanner Schobel and Luis Villareal, are seniors.
They came out on senior night and threw a no hitter. That says a lot about who they are and how hard they work throughout the year. We had some mental mis takes early in the game, but we bounced back past those and got enough timely hits to edge out a win. It feels good. We still got a big game next week against Richards to see if we go to the playoffs or not. We're working towards that and hopefully we get the victory next Monday."
Round Top-Carmine senior pitcher Tanner Schobel tossed a gem and nearly pitched the entire game. "Arm's definitely a little sore," Schobel said. "Throwing a no-hitter's always exciting. It's a good feeling to have." The two teams found themselves tied at one a piece until Round Top scored on a wild pick off throw in the bottom of the third inning to make it 2-1. Schobel went on to strikeout eight more batters throughout the game with one of the innings being all strikeouts in the top of the fifth. Villareal then came in for the top of the seventh to close it out on another strike-out and a pop up to himself to wrap up a 2-1 victory.
