Schulenburg High School athletics brought the weights out to the football field April 30 at David Husmann Memorial Stadium as they had three metal stations set up for squatting and one orange padded seat for the bench press. The ones participating were a number of athletes, mostly football players, who cheered each other on as they lifted weights. There were also coaches on hand to help spot the athletes during their reps and provide extra support as well. One of the coaches on site was head football coach and athletic director Luke Hobbs.
“This is just a really good job of kids getting to show off what they’ve done,” said Hobbs. “They put in a lot of hard work. They lift a lot. This has kind of been getting to show off what they’ve accomplished this year in the weight room. It’s the last max of our cycle before we get to summer time. Summer time is a lot about conditioning and maintaining from here on out, so this is probably the strongest we’ll be is right now. Their numbers have been phenomenal. They’re jumping through the roof. You can see how much they’ve grown in the last year just by listening to these max numbers.”
The Shorthorns had this event last year also, but it was forced to be set up inside due to rain. There isn’t a particular way on how they set it up, they basically just go out and lift weights. The coaches and parents also hold a meeting afterwards to discuss summer conditioning.
Parents sit in the stands to watch the athletes lift and it’s a laid back event that showcases the strength these athletes have built throughout the year and their high school careers.
