ACRTA holds last meeting

SEALY – Austin County Retired Teachers Association President Don Allphin presided over the last meeting of the 20232024 school year on May 9 at Tony’s Restaurant in Sealy. Peggy Short’s March minutes and Kathleen Lackey’s Treasurer’s report were approved.

SEALY — Austin County Retired Teachers Association President Don Allphin presided over the last meeting of the 20232024 school year on May 9 at Tony’s Restaurant in Sealy. Peggy Short’s March minutes and Kathleen Lackey’s Treasurer’s report were approved.

Reports were given from the State Convention in Corpus Christi. Those attending were Janet Montgomery, Lackey and Short. In addition, reports from the District 6 meeting in Huntsville were given. Those attending were Don Allphin, Janet Allphin, Montgomery, Shirley Thompson and Lackey. There was a discussion and approval about purchasing a new computer for the local unit. The scholarship report was given by Carolyn Golan.

One scholarship is being awarded to a student from each of the three public high schools in the county: Bellville, Brazos and Sealy. Legislative updates and information regarding school choice were discussed. Members were urged to keep current and to be sure to vote in all local, state and federal elections. Members were also reminded to pay their annual dues, $35 for state plus $5 for local.

Outgoing President Don All- phin installed the new officers for the 2024-2025 school year. They are President Janet Montgomery, First Vice President Janet Allphin, Co-Second Vice Presidents Carolyn Golan and Barbara Hubenak, Secretary Peggy Short, and Treasurer Kathleen Lackey. Before closing, members enjoyed the drawings for door prizes.

A planning meeting for the 2024-2025 school year is being held today (Thursday, June 6) at at 11 p.m. at Tony’s Restaurant in Sealy.
