Social media posts have been mounting against the proposed wind energy farm in Fayette County near Schulenburg. This 20,000-plus acreage wind farm will generate 250 megawatts of power, with windmills up to 600 feet tall.

While the wind farm promises to be a financial opportunity for landowners, it has also ignited a significant worry among the local community and citizens of Fayette County. This growing concern could potentially overshadow the project, known as Mustang Wind.

One group, Fayette County Texas - Stop the Wind Turbines, has already taken a proactive stance, generating a petition and amassing a following of 940 members. The key issues they raise are the visual impact of the wind turbines on the landscape and the potential harm to bird populations due to their migratory patterns intersecting with the windmill blades.

Not much can be done about the view since the county government has little control over the turbines being built on private land. One option is to deny prop- erty tax abatements if the firm seeking to establish the windmill farm requests them.

According to a company representative, the wind energy industry now takes into account the migratory patterns of birds and uses past research and technology to lessen the bird kill.
