Lady Horns hungry for another shot at state in volleyball

SCHULENBURG - Another team dominating in volleyball is the Schulenburg Lady Shorthorns with a record of 7-2 to start the season. Head coach Don - ald Zapalac is elite and also has athleti cism on his team offensively and defen- sively. The Lady Horns have wins against East Bernard, Boling, Cypress Christian, St. John XXIII, Weimar, Edna, and then another win against Weimar. Key players for Schulenburg are Haylee Vacek and Emmrie Marx. Marx was one of the best hitters on last year’s state tournament team, if not the best and she holds that same title this year with 25 kills to show for it in the match vs East Bernard. Vacek added 15 kills in the same matchup.

Zapalac has sent many of his athletes to the college level and will likely continue to succeed at a high level with his ability to develop talent and coach situa- tions in big games. His daughter, Landry Zapalac, recorded 49 assists as a setter in the East Bernard game. This team has athletes, coaching, and chemistry, which are all key ingredients that Schulenburg has possessed for a long while and will continue to possess if they stay on this kind of roll. This team is a no-doubt con tender for another shot at a state tourna- ment.
