DAR plans Constitution Week activities

Communities nationwide will celebrate the spirit and meaning of the country’s Constitution beginning Sept. 17.

On this day in 1787, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, 39 delegates at the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution of the United States of America.

Nearly 170 years later, in 1955, DAR spearheaded an effort to set aside one week annually when Americans could celebrate this iconic signing. After petitioning Congress to set aside the week of Sept. 17 – 23, on Aug. 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Constitution Week into law.

Local chapters of NSDAR celebrate with many events to honor this founding document.

Locally, Columbus Mayor Lori An Gobert will sign a proclamation commemorating Constitution Week at the city council meeting on Monday, Sept. 9, at 5:30 pm.

And then, celebrations kick off on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 2:45 p.m., when the DAR, Vietnam Veterans, and Sons of the American Revolution will meet at the flagpole at the Veteran Memorial Center at 1349 Legion Dr. in Columbus for a short ceremony.

Meanwhile, at 3 p.m., local churches agreed to ring their bells simultaneously with other Bells Across America for one minute.

A Constitution Week presentation and books will be displayed at the Nesbitt Memorial Library from Sept. 16-21.

KULM (FM 98.3) will air public service announcements highlighting our Constitution throughout the week, so listen in.
