SCHULENBURG — The Columbus High School volleyball team went down to Burton High School Aug. 23 at Shorthorns Gym in Schulenburg in two sets by a final score of 20-25, 19-25 in tournament play.
In a match that started earlier than scheduled, it seemed hard for Columbus to find a rhythm as Burton poured on the offense throughout the match.
“Burton played incredible defense today," said Columbus head volleyball coach Kayley Johns. “They were digging everything that we hit it felt like. They made adjustments from the last time we had played them. They did a really good job playing defense. We just needed to make more adjustments. We've been playing some really good volleyball, but today, we were not executing early like our goal is. We just couldn't put the ball down because they were playing defense, so we've got some small adjustments to make and we'll move forward. We'll learn from it and move forward." Columbus lost a closer first set 20-25, then trailed 3-0 in the second set until they climbed back and took a 6-4 lead on two blocks in a row, one being from junior Gracie Schobel.
Back-to-back kills from Bur-ton tied it back at six, then both teams traded punches during the middle of the set with some errors on both sides and some offensive points to go along with it. After Columbus took an 11-10 lead, Burton answered back with five-consecutive points, which included an ace to make it 15-11. A bunch of kills later on in the set put Burton ahead 20-16, then Columbus answered back with a couple points of their own on a couple kills with one from Schobel.
Some blocks mixed in down the stretch from Burton, a crucial ace, and a final ball in the net from Columbus won Burton the set and match 25-20.
