Carrie Jeanette (Garling) Steinbach passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, September 8, 2024, in Sealy, Texas, at the age of 88 years. Carrie was born in Bellville on April 18, 1936, to parents John Garling and Alice (Mettke) Garling. Carrie’s family lived in the Peter’s Community between Bellville and Sealy Texas where she attended school until 2nd grade and then completed her schooling in Bellville. Carrie met Edgar Steinbach at her first job Mr. Pats.
They dated until he was drafted into the Marine Corp and was sent to Korea. Upon his return they were married on January 23, 1954, and were happy for 55 years.
Carrie was baptized and confirmed member of St. Johns Lutheran Church of Bellville, Tx and also attended the United Methodist Church. When Carrie moved to Sealy after Edgar’s death, she moved her membership to Trinity Lutheran Church where she attended with her daughter and family.
Carrie was a member of the Bellville Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary. During the initial initiation she and other new members were sent on a scavenger hunt around town. As part of the initiation, they were arrested and taken to jail where their husbands had to bail them out. Carrie and Edgar also were members of the pumper racer teams. They traveled to many towns to race against other department teams. Carrie and Edgar were members of a square dance group called the Bluebonnet Swingers. They both loved to dance and enjoyed traveling to other towns to dance with the club. Carrie was also a member of the American Legion in Bellville. Carrie loved to work and enjoyed the people she worked for and with. Her first job was a car hop at Mr. Pat's. She held many jobs in her life including working at Cameron's 5 and Dime, Paul’s Pharmacy, Gross Studio, Superior Furniture Factory, Bellville Meat Market, she spent the bulk of her life as a cafeteria worker and manager at Bellville ISD.
Carrie loved to bake bread, can foods and make jelly form dewberries but she especially loved when her son John went hunting or fishing. She helped him process his deer, doves and fish and then made an excellent meal with the meat. Her walls were decorated with the heads of many trophies.
When Carrie wasn’t working or cooking, she loved to read and travel. She attended many Astro's games with her granddaughter Devon. She even traveled to Globe Life Field to watch the Astros play the Rangers and to Tampa Bay Florida to watch the Rays vs the Astros. At the age of 85 she took her first trip to Walt Disney World in Florida with her grandson John. She rode roller coasters yelling and waving her hands in the air! She traveled to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy with her grandson Dennis. He helped her to manage the climb up to Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany and Mt. Pilatus in Switzerland. Her travels took her as far north as Canda, west to California, and east to Maine on Senior bus trips. Her last trip was with her daughter on a short jaunt up I-10 to K. Spoetzl Brewery. She especially loved the free Shiner beer sample at the end of the tour.
Above all in her long life she loved her Lord and her children, grandchildren and great-grand children and her grand dogs as well.
