Schulenburg takes care of Brazos in football on homecoming night

Schulenburg takes care of Brazos in football on homecoming night

SCHULENBURG — Shorthorns football picked a good night to have a big game as it was homecoming night and they defeated Brazos High School by a final score of 35-6 at Shorthorns Field Sept. 20. Schulenburg controlled the entire game and were stellar both on offense and defense.

“They’re good,” said Schulenburg head football coach Luke Hobbs on Brazos. “This is their first loss of the year, so it's good.

It doesn’t get us in the playoffs or anything, but it gives us the right momentum going forward for next week against Kenedy, so we accomplished what we needed to accomplish tonight and I’m really happy for our guys.”

Schulenburg senior quarterback Aaron Janacek completed 2 passing touchdowns for the night and also had 86 yards rushing on the ground.

“I mean, it’s a great win,” Janacek said. “They were talking all week. They were gonna beat us cause they’re a bigger team and that just wasn’t true. We were the more physical team. We were faster, we were stronger. We couldn’t have been stopped this game.”

Brazos suffers their first loss of the season, but they are still in good shape and have shown tons of upside early in the season.

“Schulenburg has a very good football team," said first-year Brazos head coach Audie Ray Jackson. “They’re very physical and they were from the very start. We traded punches with them in the first quarter, then they capi talized on a turnover we had and we just seemed to never be able to get our feet again. Defensively, they did some things that put us in a bind. They’re quite a bit bigger than we are in some areas and it really showed tonight. We made some adjustments in the second half and gave us a good opportunity, but we just couldn’t put any points on the board to get back in the game.”

Brazos quarterback Jarvse Dickerson made the first big play of the game early in the first quarter by scoring a 59-yard touchdown run at the 10:53 mark in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point. This would be the Cougars’ only score of the game as Schulenburg answered right back about a minute later on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Janacek to Jayse Janda. With 2:54 to play, the Shorthorns added to their lead with a threeyard run on a pitch play for the final score of the quarter and a 14-6 lead.

Schulenburg found the end zone on the same exact play with four and a half minutes to go in the second quarter for their only points of the half, then ran in for another short touchdown for six yards with 4:44 to go in the third quarter to make it 286. The Shorthorns iced the game midway through the fourth quarter on a long pass for a 35-6 lead, which would cruise them to victory on homecoming night.
