Gutierrez sentenced to 30 years for Columbus murder

COLUMBUS — Judge Jessica R. Crawford, 2nd 25th Judicial District Court in Colorado County sentenced Ruben Gutierrez, 19, to 30 years in Texas Department of Criminal Justdice for the murder of Edwin James King, of Houston.

Columbus Police responded to gunshots in the area of Rampart and Bonham wtreets in Columbus at about 11:14 p.m. on Aug. 23, 2022.

At the time, an unknown suspect fired multiple gunshots at a male victim, Edwin James King. The Colorado County EMS was dispatched to the scene and it was determined the victim was deceased. The Columbus Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Colorado County Sheriff's Office.

The investigation by the Texas Ranger Company A revealed that Gutierrez was the shooter and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Sept. 14, 2022, Gutierrez was located in Crosby and was arrested by a task force without incident. He was held on the recommended bond on the warrant for $500,000.

The Columbus PD and the Texas Rangers, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offender and Fugitive Task Force, located Gutierrez in Crosby and arrested him on the outstanding warrant for the murder of King.
