COLUMBUS - Constitution Week is held annually from Sept.
17 to 23. This year, the John Ev - erett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated this event throughout the city of Columbus. During City Council on Sept. 9, Columbus Mayor Lori An Gobert signed a proclamation in recognition of that founding document.
This proclamation was then on display at the Nesbitt Memo-
rial Library in Columbus. Li -
brarian Susan Chandler allowed the DAR to present an exhibit, books, complimentary games and pocket constitutions during the week.
Constitution packets were also donated to all eighth grade stu-
dents in Columbus. Kevin Winfield, Garrett Schin - dler and Lucas Friedrich at Co -
lumbus Junior High, and Danette Cantu at St. Anthony's Catholic
School were on hand to accept
these packets, which included a pocket constitution, bookmark, American flag, pin, pencil, activ ity pad, and friendship bracelet.
Each school library also received a book on the constitution and replica founding documents.
Chapter members recorded short public service announce- ments on the Constitution's im - portance. KULM generously aired these throughout the week.
Finally, the Vietnam Veterans presented a color guard on Sept.
17 while joining with John Ever - ett Chapter members in a "Ring ing of the Bells” celebration at the Veterans' Hall. On that day in 1787, the bells of Independence Hall in Philadelphia rang out to announce that the Consti tution had been signed.
Likewise, bells of all kinds are rung nationwide at 3 p.m. to remember this event.
First Baptist Church and St. John's Episcopal Church joined the Vets and DAR to ring bells in Columbus for one minute. All to remind Americans to read our Constitution and know our rights.
