Van Vleck has it's way with Brazos in football

WALLIS — The Brazos High School football team went down to Van Vleck High School Oct. 4 at Cougars Field in Wallis by a final score of 45-14.

It was only a two possession game at halftime, then Van Vleck broke the game open with a bunch of scoring on big run plays to secure the win.

“We just struggled stopping the Wing T," said Brazos first-year head coach Audie Ray Jackson. “We never could get pressure on the edge. They just out-physicaled us. Offensively, we had some very bright points. In fact, we did better this week than we did last week. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough. We got to do a good enough job on defense to hold peo- ple to 13-14 points or less. We're just not able to do that right now.”

Van Vleck scored right away on a 57-yard run down the Brazos sideline from senior running back Corey Austin to take a 7-0 lead. About seven minutes later, Austin took a 35-yarder for a touchdown, this time down his own sideline at the 4:37 mark to make it 14-0.

Brazos was able to move the ball down the field a few possessions later and capitalize on a touchdown run by junior quarterback Jarvse Dickerson for 10 yards to make it 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Leopards only scored once in the second quarter with 41 seconds to play on a 10-yard touchdown pass after driving the ball into Brazos territory and made it 21-6 going into the locker room at halftime.

Austin scored again with 4:51 to go in the third quarter, but Brazos responded on another touchdown from Dickerson on a quarterback keeper for one yard and a two point conversion on a short play-action pass in the right corner of the end zone to make it 28-14 at the 3:15 mark. This would be the last score of the third quarter.

Van Vleck went on to score at the very beginning of the fourth quarter on a 10-yard run around the outside to put the scoreboard at 35-14, then went on to kick a field goal at the 4:13 mark and

iced the game with a 70-yard punt return with 3:20 to go in the game to seal a 45-14 win.
