Grand jury indicts McKim for murder

HALLETTSVILLE — Kayla Marie McKim, 21, of Flatonia, was indicted by a Lavaca County grand jury on Oct. 2, stemming from the murder of Jason Pilat of Shiner on March 5, 2023.

McKim is the daughter of former Flatonia postmaster Michael McKim.

Pilat was killed by a gunshot to the head on March 2, 2023, at the 3400 block of U.S. Highway 90A, near Shiner. Michael McKim traced his wife’s vehicle to the residence of the victim by using a tracking app on the phone. Kayla McKim was with her father during the tracking and shooting.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department arrested Kayla McKim on a warrant, magistrated by Fayette County Precinct 1, Justice of the Peace Kyle Hartmann and transported to Lavaca County jail in Hallettsville.

She was charged with the offense of murder.

Kayla McKim’s bond was set at $25,000 and is free on bond.
