COLUMBUS — The Columbus Garden Club invites everyone to join them and special guests to celebrate Texas Arbor Day on Friday, Nov. 1, at 10:30 a.m. in MidTown Park in Columbus.
Doreen and Dale Alexander will be honored this year for their generosity and dedication to the community.
This is the club’s 65th year of community beautification and civic improvement projects. Over these decades, members have planted many trees.
The numerous trees have included pink magnolias, live oaks, Monterey oaks, redbuds, crape myrtles, southern red oak, a seedling from the Austin Treaty Oak, red maples, pines and a variety of other evergreens.
In 2014, the garden club distributed 300 seedling trees throughout the community for planting to replace the many trees that did not survive the droughts of 20122013.
The garden club’s history of providing beauty, shade and wildlife habitat continues this year with the planting of a cedar elm.
A drought-tolerant tree native to much of Texas including this area, the moderate growth rate of dense foliage will provide food and cover for many birds and insects as well as add diversity to the trees already shading Mid-Town Park.
All are welcome to join the celebration of the planting of this tree at Preston and Railroad ave- nue near the flag circle on Friday, Nov. 1 at 10:30 a.m.
A casual outdoor reception will follow with light refreshments and the opportunity to chat with this year’s honorees, Doreen and Dale Alexander.
In case of rain, the ceremony and reception will move to St. John’s Episcopal.
