Round Top-Carmine trounces Prairie Lea

ROUND TOP — The Round Top-Carmine High School volleyball team heavily defeated Prairie Lea High School October 22 at Cubs Gym by a final score of 25-7, 25-2, 25-7. Prairie Lea was simply overmatched by Round Top and the Cubettes took advantage with all kinds of offense.

“Our goal in district is just to bring the energy and make people match us,” said Round Top-Carmine head volleyball coach Catie Weishuhn. “Make sure we’re taking care of the ball on our side of the net. Just getting better every single this serve.”

Round Top had a 12-4

lead in the first set, then scored five points in a row to make it 17-4.

Prairie Lea only scored one more point in a stretch where the Cubettes capitalized on mistakes from Prairie Lea to go along with a block, a bunch of kills, and an ace to put it at 22-5. A tip ball and two more kills from Round Top won them the set 256.

The Cubettes scored the first 15 points of the second set on Markwardt’s ace spree, a couple kills, and a couple more aces.

A miscommunication from Round Top gave Prairie Lea their first point of the set before more aces and kills from the Cubettes won them the set 25-2, with the game winning point being on a kill from senior outside hitter Tess Eilers.

The third set was a little closer as a serve in the net from Round Top put the scoreboard at 5-3.

Round Top extended their advantage with tons of more aces along with a few other points mixed in, which included a tip ball from Eilers to give them a 15-4 lead.

More aces mixed with kills from the Cubettes won them the set and match 25-7 and the game-winning point was on a mishit from Prairie Lea.

Cubettes freshman setter Madison Markwardt recorded nine total aces for the match and even had six aces in a row.
