BASTROP — Rice football was defeated in a really close game by Lexington High School Nov. 14 at Memorial Stadium in Bastrop by a final score of 38-27.
This was a game that could’ve went either way as big plays were made in big moments for both teams, ultimately coming down to a decision in the last posses - sion.
“I think our kids played their asses off,” said Rice head football coach Brad Dumont. “Thought they played hard the whole game.
I think the quarterback roughing the passer was the turning point in the football game. I’m proud of the way our kids persevered.
They played, came back, kept fighting all the way through. We just came up short. They got a good football team.”
A scoreless first quarter led to a four-yard touchdown catch for Lexington at the 9:03 mark in the second quarter. Rice answered a few minutes later on a 14-yard touchdown run from senior run -
ning back Dyren Johnson to tie it at seven. The Eagles then kicked a field goal for 20 yards with 25 seconds to go to take a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Lexington didn’t waste any time scoring in the second half with a 28-yard run for a touchdown in the first minute of the third quarter to make it 17-7. Rice responded with a long run at the
7:25 mark to put it at 17-14 with a 69-yard touchdown run up the
middle from junior Robert Ben - nett.
Bennett made an interception on the next possession, then Raiders senior RJ Meyers ran in for a goal line TD with 4:43 to play to take a 20-17 lead. The two teams followed it with trading touchdowns on a 35-yard touchdown catch from Lexing ton, a 71-yard touchdown catch
from Rice senior D’neriyan Full er, then a 37-yarder from the Eagles to take a 31-27 lead at the 19 second mark to wrap up the third quarter.
After turnovers from both teams to start the fourth quarter, they both held their own defen - sively and Lexington made the only score of the quarter with 50 seconds to go in the ball game on
a one-yard run to seal the game at 38-27.
