Armed standoff ends peacefully thanks to cool-headed deputies

FAYETTE COUNTY — Deputy Duane Meagher responded to a residence in the 1900 block of North Kirtley Road on Nov. 20 at about 5:30 p.m. regarding a welfare check called in by a neighbor. The neighbor reported that a female subject was afraid of a male subject with whom she resided.

As Meagher approached the residence that was up on stilts, a male sub- ject, who was identified as Maximus Forbing, 37, appeared on the balcony. Forbing became confrontational with the deputy. He demanded a badge number and the deputy gave it to him twice. The deputy was in full patrol uniform and arrived in a fully marked patrol unit.

A female subject began calling down from the residence to the deputy. She told him that she needed him. The deputy asked her to come down and speak with him and she agreed. Forbing went back into the residence and an argument started between him and the female subject.

D eputy Chase Ceder arrived on the scene while Meagher attempted to make entry by going up a staircase to the residence. As Forbing and the female stood next to each other atop the stairs, Forb ing produced a handgun and pointed it toward the deputy from the top of the stairs. The deputy took cover underneath the elevated residence. The female came down the stairs and was secured. Deputies then took cover behind a patrol unit. Additional units arrived on the scene, and a standoff ensued as Forbing stood on the balcony.

Fayette County Sergeant Ryan Meagher and Deputy Duane Meagher were able to talk Forbing down. Forbing came down the stairs and surrendered to the deputies on the scene. Located in Forbings’ jacket was the 9mm Beretta handgun that he admitted to pointing at the deputy. Located on the balcony where the standoff occurred was an AR-15 ri- fle.

Forbing was arrested for Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, a 1st Degree Felony. No one was injured during this incident, and it ended peacefully.
