Pam and Henry Potter honored with 2024 Laura Ann Rau Historic Preservation Award

Award recognizes decades of dedication to preserving Columbus’ history and community spirit

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Historical Preservation Trust Inc. (CHPT) proudly honored Pam and the late Hen - ry Potter with the 2024 Laura Ann Rau Historic Preservation Award during its annual History Forum on Nov. 12 at the Stafford Opera House. Surrounded by community members, Pam Potter, joined by her son Charles, accepted the award on behalf of the couple.

“We are thrilled to present this year’s

Laura Ann Rau Historic Preservation Award to Pam and Henry," said CHPT

President Julie Prause. “Their dedication to preserving the history and spirit of Columbus has left a profound legacy. While Henry was not physically with us to accept the award, his presence was deeply felt. His unwavering love for Co - lumbus continues to inspire us all." The Potters were nominated by fellow local business owner Debbie Damon, who recounted their welcoming spirit and generosity in her nomination letter. "Henry and Pam greeted me with open arms when I first moved to Columbus," Damon wrote. "Their commitment to the community, coupled with their re - markable history as local business owners, makes them truly deserving of this recognition."

Potters Western Store, a cornerstone of the Columbus community since 1965, was established by Henry's parents, Clarence and Eloise Potter. Henry and Pam took ownership in 1974, building the business into a hub for locals and visitors alike. Often referred to as the “sec- ond Columbus Chamber of Commerce," the store has served as a gateway to the town's history and culture.

The Potters’ contributions extend far beyond their business. Over many decades, they have volunteered with organizations such as the First Baptist

Church, the Boy Scouts, the Colorado County Fair Association, and the Mag - nolia Homes Tour-now CHPT. Potter's leadership in the Magnolia Homes Tour in the 1970s and 1980s was instrumental in early restoration and renovation efforts for the Stafford Opera House.

In 2022, the Texas Historical Commission recognized Potters Western Store as a Texas Treasure Historic Business. The award celebrates businesses with over 50 years of continuous opera - tion, family ownership, and presence in the same location.

The store will celebrate its 60th anni - versary in 2025, a testament to the fami ly’s resilience and dedication.

In July 2024, Henry Potter passed away, leaving a profound legacy of ser vice and passion for his community.

His love for history and commitment to preserving Columbus' unique character live on through Pam and their children, Charles, Brian, and Amanda.
