COLUMBUS — Fourth grade is the first year Texas students receive an in-depth study of our state’s history. To that end, Columbus Elementary School (CES) teachers Tammy Ruether, Mark Vickers and Kristen Mraz partnered with the local Dilue Rose Harris chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas to present the Texas Pioneer Life Trunk to all CES fourth graders.
Donna Pustejovsky and Kathleen Townzen exhibited various items that would be used in the early 1800s when Texas was a nation.
The kids compared these maps, currency, household articles, toys, clothing, etc., to how they would use similar items today.
Afterward, the students played, handled, experimented, and explored the items further.
And since this presentation was right before the Thanksgiving break, the children hopefully came away with an appreciation of their lives versus those of the pioneers.
