Caregiver self-care

A caregiver is anyone responsible for the care of a family member or a friend of any age with a serious health condition. Caregiving can be very rewarding, but it can also be a source of both physical and emotional stress. And this means that the caregiver needs care too. To care for yourself as a caregiver, be sure to keep up with your own health needs. Exercise, take breaks, eat healthy meals and snacks, take short walks, try to get adequate sleep, and try to do something fun or relaxing every day. And don’t neglect to reach out for help when you need it.

Signs of stress can be feeling exhausted or anxious, being easily angered or impatient, having trouble sleeping, feeling sad, or having frequent headaches. Be aware and ask for help. And anyone can help a caregiver. Give them encouragement and emotional support. Volunteer to sit with the person with health issues, even if it’s only for 15 minutes. Volunteer to bring food or snacks. Send positive, cheerful notes.
