COLUMBUS - In a developing story, a house fire in the early morning hours of Dec. 20 at 322 Preston St. in Columbus, Penny Miekow perished in her home along with a number of her constant cat companions.
The call went out at 3:22 a.m. to the Columbus VFD and call-outs for support to the Weimar and Frelsburg VFD The fast-moving fire destroyed the home. The fire was extinguished at 5:13 a.m.
State Fire Marshals were called to the scene since there was a fire-related death, which is standard procedure in such instances as this.
A cause has not been determined as agencies work to pinpoint the fire's or igin.
