Extension cord and smoke detector safety reminder

COLUMBUS - Due to recent incidents, the Colum -

bus Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) wants to remind ev eryone about the importance of extension cord safety, especially during the colder months when heating devices are in use.

To prevent devastating inci- dents, the CVFD urges everyone to follow these extension cord safety tips: - Avoid overloading extension cords. Extension cords are not designed to handle high-powered devices like appliances, battery chargers, space heaters or heat lamps. When using high-wattage devices, plug them directly into wall outlets.

- Inspect cords for damage.

Regularly check cords for fray ing, cracking or other signs of wear and replace damaged cords immediately. Never use a cord that feels hot or is damaged in any way.

Smoke detectors are a critical part of keeping your family safe. The early warning gives you and your loved ones a crucial time to escape.

Tips for smoke detector safety: - Install detectors in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home.

- Test your smoke detectors monthly to ensure they are work- ing properly. Pick a specific date on the calendar so you won’t forget.

- Replace batteries at least once a year or when you hear a low-battery chirp. If you are replacing yearly, pick a date on the calendar so you won’t forget.

- Replace your smoke detec tors every 10 years to maintain reliability.

Other smoke alarm tips are: - Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen, at least 10 feet from the stove. This prevents false alarms.

- Use multiple types of alarms. Ionization smoke alarms are better for flaming fires while photoelectric alarms are better for smoldering fires.

- Install alarms that have strobe lights and bed shakers for people who are hard of hearing or deaf.

- Install at least one carbon monoxide alarm in your home in a central location.

Use cords appropriately. Exten sion cords are for temporary use only.

- Use the right cord for the job. Ensure your extension cord is rated for the device and environment, whether indoors or outdoors. The cord on the device or tool you are using will have a wattage rating. Match this up with your extension cord.

- Never daisy chain cords.

Connecting multiple extension cords together increases the risk of overheating and fire.

- Keep cords clear of hazards.

Avoid running cords under rugs, through doors or in high-traffic areas where they can be pinched or tripped over.

- Unplug when not in use. Al ways disconnect devices when they are not actively being used.
