WALLIS — The Brazos High School girl’s basketball team went down to East Bernard High School Jan. 3 at Cougars Gym by a final score of 51-23. After relatively close first quarter, East Bernard started to settle in and put their high-powered offense on display with baskets near the paint and shot-making, which made it hard for Brazos to keep up defensively.

“They play very aggressive,” said Brazos head girl’s basketball coach Griffin Clary. "They're very fundamental, they’re very strong, they rebound, they do all the things right. They don’t hurt themselves. We gave them too many opportunities in the first half trying to push the ball.

Fast-opportunities that maybe we shouldn’t have forced that we did.

We played them close in the first half. At halftime, I thought we made some adjustments. They got after it. They played for 32 minutes and we played for 30 minutes, so that’s the difference.”

Both teams traded points ear- ly in the first quarter and Brazos even took a 6-5 lead after a fast- break layup from senior small forward Camille Combie.

East Bernard snagged their lead back on a few layups and a bank shot from an inbounds play in the final seconds to take a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Brahmanettes stretched their advantage with a big second quarter and they surged ahead 18-8 after a pull up three-pointer at the 5:11 mark. A bunch more layups and a couple free throws throughout the rest of the quarter put East Bernard ahead 26-14 at halftime.

East Bernard didn’t look back in the third quarter and made three-consecutive baskets to take a 33-14 lead with 6:30 to go in the quarter. Brazos responded with a fast-break layup, then the Brahmanettes made a free throw and a couple more baskets to make it 41-17 at the end of the third quarter. East Bernard cruised in the fourth quarter, playing their same kind of game en route to a 51-23 win.
