COLUMBUS — Cardinals girl’s basketball won in blowout fashion Jan. 10 at the Marley Giddens Center in Columbus vs Yoakum High School by a final score of 61-39. Columbus made shots from long distance, around the rim, and held their own on the de fensive end in order to take this game comfortably from start to finish. "It was basically a lot of hustle, no doubt," said Columbus head girl’s basketball coach Mike Al bers. "I thought we got after it, were aggressive, and looked to do some things that we’ve been working on. Hopefully we can keep doing it because sometimes we take our time getting the ball down when we have somebody open and not hitting that open person. Especially early, we moved the ball around real good to everybody. We got some easy shots because of it."
Columbus guard Anaya Gard - ner had the ball in her hands a lot and was able to make a bunch of plays for her teammates, as well as for herself. "Work on my game," Gardner said on her goals for the season. "Make the playoffs, make a run in the playoffs, make it to state." Columbus jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter, then a short jumper from Thea Schobel made it 15-4 with 3:45 to go. Yoakum fought back with some free throws and a three pointer, but it was still Columbus with the big lead of 20-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Cardinals really started to pull away in the second quarter as they scored 15-con- secutive points and held Yoakum scoreless all the way up to the 1:33 mark in the quarter, leading to an and one basket for the
Lady Bulldogs and a short basket
for Columbus to make way for a 37-12 advantage at halftime for Some free throws and a couple threes from Columbus, as well as a few layups from both teams made it 54-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Even though Yoakum was able to score a little more in the fourth quarter, it was nowhere near enough as the Lady Cardinals rolled to a 61-39 victory.
