Weimar to host its first Go-Texan Day

WEIMAR – Weimar will host its first Go-Texan Day on Sat urday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Weimar City Hall and Hill Bank Pavilion. The Weimar Go-Texan Day will feature the Harris County Sheriff's Office Junior Mounted Posse Relay Riders.

The HCSO Jr. Mounted Posse will stop in Weimar as they make their way into Weimar on the Pony Express Relay ride. There will be a baton hand-off, a proclamation ceremony, shopping, a petting zoo and a meet and greet with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo mascot, Howdy. There will also be a contest for the best-dressed cowboy and cowgirl in the crowd.

The City of Weimar has partnered up with the Colorado County Area Go Texan Committee, the Weimar Chamber of Commerce, the HLSR Speaker’s Committee, the Weimar PD, the Weimar VFD and the Encore Lions to welcome the HCSO Jr. Mounted Posse.

Call them Ambassadors of Good Will, or just call them cute. The Harris County Junior Deputy Sheriff’s Mounted Posse is riding tall in the saddle, spreading the word about the forthcoming 92nd Annual Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.

This event honors Texas western tradition and begins with the HLSR parade. The youngsters, clad in matching western sheriff’s attire—cowboy hats, black boots, chaps, vests, and badges— will ride through Texas to spread the word about this great event in “Texas Style.”

The diminutive Junior Deputies, aged six to 18, will brave the cold and gusty winds to deliver these proclamations to surrounding cities and counties using the old-style delivery method, “the pony express ride.” In its 69th year, the posse is the oldest youth riding group in Texas.

During the year, these kids practice their horsemanship and citizenship in parades, rodeos, and local events.

The Junior Mounted Posse was established by Harris County Sheriff Clairville “Buster” Kern in 1952 as goodwill ambassadors for the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Its mission is to teach the youth of the community responsibility through caring and training for their mounts, volunteering their time as outreach ambassadors, and learning and executing intricate drills and maneuvers. The Junior Mounted Posse is a youth, horse-mounted precision drill team. Posse members are between the ages of 6-20. The Jr. Posse performs in local rodeos, parades, and participates in pony express relay rides to surrounding counties, delivering invitations to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Members must have access to a trained horse and the ability to haul their mount to practices and events.

During the year, the kids practice their horsemanship and citizenship through bi-weekly practices, monthly rodeo performances, pony express relay rides, parades and special assignments with the Sheriff's Office.
