SCHULENBURG - The Schulenburg High School girl's basketball team went down to Shiner High School Feb. 4 at Shorthorns Gym by a final score of 51-43. This was a very close game for it's entirety, but Shiner found ways to make plays and score the ball down the stretch. "The difference was we got out rebounded 45 to 22," said first-year Schulenburg head girl's basketball coach Larry Tidwell. "They had 24 offensive rebounds. It's just a poor job. It's my fault, I guess, on getting them to block out better. I'll just take the blame for it. When the ball goes up, you got to go get it. Rebounding was the key. When you let somebody have 24 offensive rebounds, that's not good. That's just put back, af - ter put back, after put back. We had a chance during the first half. We missed six layups, then we're six out of 21 from the line." Shiner took a 6-0 lead to start the game on a layup and two jumpers before Schulenburg an - swered with two free throws and two three-pointers to make it 9-8 in favor of Shiner. Schulenburg went on to surge to a 17-11 advantage after a jump - er near the elbow and a three near the top of the key, both from freshman guard Miranda Bonner. A banked-in free throw from the Lady Comanches at the 4 second mark made it 17-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams traded punches in the second quarter with a bunch of free throws, a few layups, and a three from Shiner to put the score at 26-23 in favor of Schulenburg at halftime. The two teams went back and forth again in the third quarter as a three from Schulenburg fresh - man Jenna Guentert with 4:20 to go made it 31-27, then Shiner responded with two baskets in a row to put it at 31-31. More trading baskets led to Shiner getting another two bas - kets in a row in the final minute to take a 39-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.
After Shiner started the fourth quarter strong with the first two baskets, Schulenburg answered with two baskets of their own to cut the Shiner advantage to 43-- 40.
The Lady Comanches began to pull away midway through the quarter with a layup and a short jumper to take a 47-40 lead, which was followed by a three in the corner from Schulenburg's Bonner at the 1:40 mark to put it at 47-43.
Shiner closed out the game with two big baskets in the final minute with a steal and a layup, then another layup at about the 10 second mark to seal the game 51-43.
