SEGUIN — The Round Top-Carmine High School girl’s basketball team lost to Neuces Canyon High School Feb. 13 at Seguin High School’s Matadors Gym by a final score of 48-43 in a playoff bout.

The Cubettes had a sizable lead of double-digits going into halftime, then Neuces Canyon turned on the jets in the second half with their shot making and ability to control the ball and create shots on offense.

“I just told the girls I think we got beat fundamentally,” said Round Top-Carmine head girl’s basketball coach Catie Weishuhn. "24 got hot with the three and going into it, I said I’d let anybody beat us other than 33 and 23, so I’ll take that one. She got hot and I think it was fundamental at the end. They took good, quality shots and we didn’t, so that was it.”

Round Top had a 27-17 lead at halftime and the Cubettes even extended their lead to 30-19 after a made jumper from freshman Madison Markwardt at the 5:50 mark in the third quarter. Neuces responded with a three and a long jumper, which led to a fast-break layup from Round Top, another made three, and four free throws from the Lady Panthers to put it at 32-31 in favor of the Cubettes at the end of the third quarter.

Neuces started the fourth quarter with an and one basket, which was responded by Round Top with a three-pointer in the corner from senior Tess Eilers to regain the lead at 35-34. Both teams traded a few baskets, then Neuces hit two threes on back-to- back possessions to make it 44- 39. The Cubettes answered with two baskets in a row from Markwardt and Eilers, which was followed by two crucial baskets in a row from Neuces in the final minute to close out the game at 48-43.
