WHARTON - The Wharton County Junior College Drama Department will present a humorous take on a classic horror story with “Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors.” Scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday, Feb. 20), Friday, Feb. 21, and Saturday, Feb.
22, in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus, the show is open to the public and free of admission.
Though most people are familiar with the story of Count Dracula as made popular by novelist Bram Stoker, WCJC's "Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors” will consider the Transylvanian count’s less serious side. The show's five principal actors will each tackle several unique roles.
“The playwrights have created a fast and furious comedy packed with clear wordplay and overthe- top characters that breathes new life into the world’s most famous vampire — with a hilar- ious twist," said WCJC Drama Instructor Greg McLarty. "One guy plays the female roles and one girl plays all male roles. It’s a lot of fun to watch how these students do this.”
Set construction has been an interesting endeavor as the set pieces must be stable and mobile.
The entire show must be dismantled and transported for presentation at the Texas Community College Speech and Theatre Association Play Festival later this spring. McLarty noted that the show’s themes and subject matter are best reserved for more mature audiences.
He encouraged the public to come out and enjoy what will be a night to remember.
“Dracula has never been this funny,” McLarty said. “If you love vampires comedy, or just a great night at the theater, this show is a must-see. It’s a spooky spectacle that will leave you in stitches.”
