THSCA's Coach of the Year
Three area coaches have made the 2024 THSCA (Texas High School Coaches Association) Coach of the Year list. These coaches include Matt Schobel, head coach of Columbus football, Susan Brewer, head coach of Bellville volleyball, and Kenneth Robinson, assistant coach of Columbus football.
Columbus football recently came off a state championship, so these coaches most certainly are deserving of the recognition.
“I am honored and appreciative for the award,” said Schobel. “But this is truly a team award and accomplishment. I am so proud of how are kids, coaches, trainers, etc. persevered through all of what we went through. It is truly what athletics is all about.”
Cardinals assistant coach Kenneth Robinson had a big part in the Cardinals success in helping call the shots en route to a blow out performance at Jerry World in the state championship. “What a great honor to be recognized for such an award,” Robinson said. “This is a testament to the student-athletes and to the school administration for the support given to us this year. Also, it is recognition to the best coaching staff in the state. The hours and hours of hard work and preparation each week and getting our guys ready to play with all of the ups and downs this year has been tremendous and in the end, extremely rewarding. I can honestly say that I can not be more proud of a group of young men than I am of these guys. True champions in every way.”
Bellville volleyball head coach Susan Brewer made a state championship once again last year and is known as one of the best volleyball coaches in the state of Texas for her consistent, elite success year in and year out.
“It means the world,” Brewer said. “None of that recognition is worth anything without all my kids. They’re the ones that get Bellville recognized. They’re the ones that work for us. I have to really appreciate the girls and all they do to make things happen at Bellville. It’s a two way street there. It’s very rewarding.”
Columbus football and Bellville volleyball seem to always be in contention for the state tournament and this will likely continue as long as they have coaches like Schobel, Robinson and Brewer on board.
