David Burkhalter was the guest speaker at the Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club on Feb. 20. Burkhalter owns Moonside Macarons in downtown Eagle Lake. Besides baking and selling macarons, cheesecake, madeleine cookies, and tiramisu, he is providing some creative opportunities for young people in Eagle Lake by offering two different initiatives: First is an after-school LARP program, and second is a community garden. LARP stands for Live Action Role Play, where middle and high school kids get involved physically, emotionally, and intellectually in role-playing different historical eras. The bakery is a screen-free zone where young people gather to play board games that stretch their imaginations. The community garden will start off small but will provide opportunities for the kids to plant, care for and grow their own vegetables. Courtesy photo
