The Dilue Rose Harris chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) sponsors two contests locally each year.

One is for fourth graders to create artwork depicting Texas history up to 1850. The other contest is for seventh graders on a Texas History subject DRT headquarters chose.

In January, a total of 116 entries were received from fourth graders throughout Columbus to include Sharon Hajovsky’s class at St. Anthony’s (SAS), Tammy Ruether, Mark Vickers, and Kristen Mraz classes from Columbus Elementary (CES), and Kelli Hickman's class from the Live Oak Art Center After School Program.

Local winners are Peyton Guzman, first place; Beau Neal, second place; and Kennedy Combs, third place. All submissions were forwarded to the Republic of Texas Museum in Austin for further judging. Additionally, in February, Danette Cantu's SAS sev-enth graders were challenged with an essay topic, “Which site should be considered the birthplace of the Republic of Texas; West Columbia, Washington-on-the-Brazos, or San Jacinto?'

Students could visit the Bill Stein Room at Nesbitt Library to help with their research.

Top essays were composed by Kaden Glueck, first place; Isabella Lowe, second place; and Wyatt Pool, third place.

Glueck’s essay has the opportunity to continue on to judging at the district and/or state level.

All students received a certificate for their hard work, study, and creativity, and the winners received an additional small monetary award.
