Flatonia City Manager exits after city council votes to accept resignation

FLATONIA — Flatonia City Manager Sonya Bishop tendered her resignation after a three-hour executive session on March 3 by the Flatonia City Council.

All council members were present, and Bishop and the city attorney went into executive session to determine, after an independent, third-party investigation, whether Bishop had perpetrated misconduct and gross negligence in duty.

The investigation was held because of a formal complaint.

During a Feb. 17 city council meeting, Mayor Seale said, according to the Flatonia Argus, "an employee filed a complaint against the city manager, and we are conducting an official investiga tion on the matter. Additonally, Seale says, “Based on the investigation, we found areas of misconduct, we found areas of gross negligence in duty, and we allowed her the opportunity to resign, understanding that, and she chose to take that option. The investigation and this whole deal was strictly based on the formal complaint received. We do our best to follow the personnel policy and ensure that the external investigation was a fair and unbiased process, and I feel that was accomplished with the investigation.”

Bishop resigned immediately following the executive session. According to Mayor Seale, a statement will be forthcoming to address the decision by the council and the city manager accepting the resignation.
