Fayette County experiences cyber incident

Fayette County Judge Dan Mueller's office acknowledged that the county government computer system experienced an incident that disrupted normal operations. Judge Mueller said “Fayette County has recently become aware of an incident within our computer network,' the statement from the judge's office read. “We are actively investigating the situation and are working diligently to determine the scope of the incident and ensure all systems are safely restored. While we investigate this activity, certain county functions may not be oper- ational. In addition, we have retained ex - perts to assist with our response. Please note that we are committed to satisfying all legal notification obligations and will provide updates as they become available. However, at this time, we do not have any evidence to suggest misuse of any personal information maintained by the county. We appreciate your patience as we investigate this issue.”

The county became aware of the incident on March 2 and immediate actions were taken to mitigate any damage.

The county's IT person is working with the Texas Association of Counties to resolve the problem.

The main problem at this time seems to be with the email system. The investigation may reveal other systems that may have been affected.

As of press time, issues with the Fayette County governmental computer system continues to be worked on and there is no timeline on when the issue will be corrected.
