LA GRANGE – The Green Door Fund for Workforce Development and Education is impacting local communities by creating opportunities for students and young adults to access education and job training in skilled trade professions. As a dedicated initiative under the Greater Fayette Community Foundation, the Green Door Fund supports hands-on training programs, workforce certifications, and ca reer development—ensuring individuals can build meaningful, sustainable careers without the burden of excessive student debt.
In Texas, nearly 50 percent of high school graduates do not immediately pursue higher education and those who do often face rising student loan debt averaging $30,000 per borrower. The Green Door Fund recognizes the need for alternative career paths and is committed to bridging the gap by supporting trade and vocational programs that lead to high-demand, well-paying jobs. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the demand for skilled tradespeople is expected to rise by 15 percent over the next decade, making this initiative more critical.
Since its inception in 2023, the Green Door Fund has awarded over $60,000 through grants to local nonprofits that align with its mission of workforce development and education.
In 2024, eight organizations received funding, including the Alliance for College and Career Student Success (ACCSS) for career exploration programs for 8th graders, Community Action Inc. of Central Texas for workforce training tablets supporting GED, ESL, and industry certifications, and the La Grange Education Support Program Foundation for site licenses for accounting and career prep classes. Additional recipients include the Boys and Girls Club of Champion Valley for updated computers and internet for after-school programs, Mission Able for critical home repairs for low-income households, and Colorado County Habitat for Humanity to support first-time homeownership for families facing financial barriers.
The Fayette County Community Theatre received funding to expand youth theatre education, and the Round Top Family Library was supported in providing English as a Second Language classes for residents seeking employment.
In addition to grants, the Green Door Fund is actively involved in mentorship through its THRIVE program. Partnering with La Grange ISD, THRIVE connects volunteers with students in need of guidance and support. With 18 active mentors and expansion plans, this program is fostering personal and professional growth for the next generation.
Looking ahead, the Green Door Fund has set a $100,000 fundraising goal for 2025, with $35,000 already available in matching funds. Every contribution helps provide resources, training, and education to those who need it most.
