Fayetteville baseball rallies late to beat Flatonia

FLATONIA — Fayetteville High School baseball traveled to Bulldogs Field April 1 to take on Flatonia High School and won by a final score of 6-2.

Clutch hits down the stretch and solid pitching as well as defense behind the mound helped propel the Lions to victory.

“We’re clicking and playing pretty good right now,” said Fayetteville head baseball coach Clint Jaeger. “Pitching is really good. We ran the bases pretty good today. We got some stolen bases, created some runs. We’re playing really good teams and we’re competing. I’m proud of the guys.”

Fayetteville pitcher Jack Schley threw a great outing and had control with his arm throughout it’s entirety.

“I put in lots of work, lots of practice,” Schley said. “Just try to be the best I can be every day and pound my zone. Try to throw the right pitch in the right count and just do whatever I can to get the out.”

Flatonia is still in great shape and is one of the best teams in the area.

“We didn’t make defensive plays early where we could’ve got out of innings a little bit earlier,” said Flatonia head baseball coach Shawn Bruns. “The last inning, we didn’t make some plays on some balls. They did a good job making contact with the in- field drawn in. It could've been a different deal in the seventh inning. We’re not where we need to be defensively right now. Our pitchers I thought kept us in the ballgame. Schley threw an excellent game for them. I thought our hitters got better from last Saturday when we played Shiner. We didn’t get enough hits when we needed to.”

A shot to the left field wall on the fly from Lawson Fritsch, a stolen base, and a ground ball to third from Easton Jaeger on a fielder's choice gave Fayetteville their first run of the game in the top of the first inning.

The Lions scored again in the next inning on two base hits and a stolen base to make it 2-0 be fore adding more insurance runs in the third inning on a stolen base at home from Fritsch for their third run of the game.

Flatonia answered in the bottom half of the inning with two base hits of their own, one being from Titan Targac for a RBI to make it 3-1.

The next run wasn’t scored un- til the bottom of the fifth inning with it being from Targac again, this time on a double to left-center.

Fayetteville made sure they secured the win in their last at bat with three base hits, a stolen base, a successful suicide squeeze bunt attempt, and a wild pick off throw for their final run of the game to take a 6-2 lead.

Fayetteville sealed the game in the bottom of the seventh with three strikeouts to earn the 6-2 win.
