EAGLE LAKE - Josiah Cobia, 18, was accidentally shot and killed after
a gun in the possession of his younger
brother, discharged on April 11 at 5 p.m. at their home in Eagle Lake.
Cobia succumbed to his wounds, ac- cording to Eagle Lake Police Chief Don - ald Chaney. Cobia was a senior at Rice High School in Eagle Lake and was an active athlete involved in both football and baseball.
The gun discharged while in the
brother's bedroom on 670 Donovan St. in Eagle Lake. The firearm discharged while being handled by the younger brother who remains unnamed because he is a minor.
Chaney said, “It was an accident and accidents happen. You have kids that get ahold of guns and unfortunately, neither of them had any business with it, but that's something we're looking into, as far as a different investigation of how they got a hold of it." Further, Chaney said that the accidental discharge was
backed by witness testimony from the family and that there would most like - ly be no charges given out for Cobia's death. The mother was unaware that the firearm was in their possession.
