COLUMBUS - The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department quickly contained a house fire at 507 Charter St. in Columbus when it was dispatched on April 22 at about 6:45 p.m. The closely built homes on Charter were spared sig-nificant damage, except for a home next door that suffered minor damage from the heat of the fire.
The home is owned by Coleen Walker. Walker exited the home during the fire. According to CVFD Chief Richard LaCourse, the fire appears to have started in a garage and started as an electrical fire. The fire may have been caused by goats chewing on wires under the carport. It quickly spread and vented up into the attic.
Although the flames did not spread to the living section of the home, it is considered to be a total loss. LaCourse said "All in all, a well-executed scene with no injuries." He credited the execution by his department and the assistance of the Colorado County EMS standing by for rehab and scene safety, City of Columbus Utilities for gas and water shutoff, AEP disconnecting the power, Frelsburg VFD dispatched for manpower and a Rapid Intervention Team and Columbus PD for traffic control and security.
A well-executed scene with up-todate equipment and training minimizes damage and loss of life.
