RESS COLUMBUS — The Colorado County Fairgrounds in Columbus did not open with a glitz of the carnival, the snorting of rodeo bulls or the chug of a tractor pull. It opened its gates to hun -
dreds of cars, trucks and trailers filled with two years of household hazardous
waste and reusable materials on March 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The event is held every two years and grows each time it is held. Vehicles containing trailers of tires and computers and who-knows-what-else lined up as volunteer staff unloaded each one using front-end loaders or gloved hands. Sorting out the reusable materials from the trash seemed like an uphill battle with the endless amount of stored items streaming in.
The well-oiled crew executed their duties and kept the vehicles inching forward. The event was made possible through the Houston-Galveston Area Council and the TCEQ.
