Pioneer women to tell their story on Heroes Day

LA GRANGE — Texas Heroes Day will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 9 am at Monument Hill/Kreische Brewery State Historical Park.

The Monument Hill Singers and re-enactors will recount the history of the Dawson Massacre, Mier Expedition, including the infamous “Black Bean Execution,” and imprisonment in Mexico in the 1840s.

A lighter side of early Texas history will be told by the Monument Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Their pioneer women will present a skit called “A Cup of Sugar” based on stories told by Josephine White in her book, “Sunbonnet Angels — Hitch Your Wagon to a Star”.

The pioneer women re-enactors are three retired school teachers, all local DRT members who share a love of history and story telling. They are Betty Hill, Frances Ziegenhals, and Debra Mahlmann.
