David Gene New, 67, of Columbus, Texas, was called home in August 2023. Born in 1955 and raised in Columbus, David was known as a loving father and brother. He is survived by his children, (David and Christina New), his siblings (Carl New, Leon New, and Deborah Dahman), his nephews (David Joe Beetner and Ryan New) and his niece (Christina Rust). He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton Ray New, and his mother, Leona Annie New née Richter. David dutifully served in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years at the rank of Master Sergeant. His military association and affiliated community service involvement were a significant part of his life; he proudly served his country and welcomed the chance to lend a hand to others. During his career, he had the opportunity to live in various locations, including California, Tennessee, Washington D.C., South Carolina, Okinawa Japan, Georgia, Hawaii, North Carolina, Maryland, Iwakuni Japan, Arizona, Connecticut, and New York. After his retirement, David returned to his hometown of Columbus, Texas. Outside of his successful career, David enjoyed being part of the Columbus community. He was passionate about the history of his hometown and shared excitement for the variety of new businesses that have emerged over the past few years. He regularly enjoyed meals at The Dewberry Café (formerly Beckey’s Café) and enjoyed checking out old cars on his drives to appointments in La Grange. Most importantly, he found joy in spending time with his family and cherished those moments dearly.
