WEIMAR – The Weimar FFA Sale was held Feb. 10 at the Weimar FFA Project Facility in Weiamr. The sale brought in $161,135 which was $1,164 less that last year’s total of $162,299, with this year breaking four records.

Ash Wednesday celebrated
COLUMBUS – St John's Episcopal Church in Columbus invited all to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14 in the parking lot of Brookshire Bros. in Columbus. After a regular Ash Wednesday service at noon inside the church on Travis Street, the church took the ashes to the streets.

Federal judge appears skeptical of new border law
A federal judge is expected to rule quickly on the constitutionality of a Texas law about to go into effect that institutes new state penalties for illegal border crossings. During a hearing last week, U.S. District Judge David Ezra said he had concerns that other states would follow Texas’ lead in creating their own immigration laws – a power given exclusively to the federal government under the U.S. Constitution.

EEA of Austin County announces Cultural Arts Contest winners
BELLVILLE – Recently, the Extension Education Association of Austin County hosted its annual 2024 Cultural Arts Contest. The event was coordinated by the Cultural Arts Committee, which was co-chaired by Barney Zimmerman of Bleiblerville EEA and Gaye Farr of West End EEA. Committee members in- clude Malinda Schramm, Clau dia Cieslewicz and Joan Buenger. The Cultural Arts Contest allows members to exhibit knowledge and skills that express individualism and creativity.

The Forgotten Typewriter
My appreciation for typewriters began in Jr. High. The low-budget private school that I attended did not have the money to supply our typing class with typewriters, so students had to provide their own. For almost two years, four semesters of typing class, I carried my Mom’s Royal portable to school every day. The case barely fit in my locker.

Seniors Together treated to barbecue
COLUMBUS - The Co - lumbus group of Seniors To gether was treated to a special delight of barbecue brisket during its last meeting on Feb.7 in Columbus. Brent Leftwich takes the brisket off the pit. Dr. Mazie Leftwich made homemade sauce on the stove. A crowd of over 60 people and 11 volunteers enjoyed the barbecue along with buttered potatoes, coleslaw and desserts galore. Seniors Together-Co - lumbus meets every first and third Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Lighthouse Fel - lowship Hall of St. Paul Luther - an Church in Columbus.
