Weimar’s Maupin wins NFHS sectional coach of the year

Weimar head softball coach Roger Maupin recently landed the NFHS Network’s Sectional Coach of the Year award for the 2022-2023 season after winning the state title in the same year. It was Weimar’s second state tournament appearance in a row under Maupin.

KENEDY – Fayetteville baseball is heading to the 2024 UIL state tournament for Class 1A again after a barnburner with D’Hanis High School May 29 at Joe Gulley Park in Kenedy by a final score of 9-8. Both teams battled it out until the very end and it was Fayetteville’s big bats, along with lights out pitching in the last inning to seal the win.

WEST POINT - Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reported on May 31 around 11:30 a.m., the Fayette Coun - ty Sheriff's Office received a 911 call re - porting a structure fire on Justice Road off State Highway 71 in West Point. The La Grange Volunteer Fire De - partment was notified and responded to the scene. Fayette County Deputy Seth Nagel and Fayette County EMS Unit Medic 3 also responded to the structure fire. Upon arrival it was reported the house was fully engulfed in flames. The occupants were out of the res - idence and checked out by EMS for smoke inhalation. LG Fire Department requested assis - tance from the Muldoon Volunteer Fire Department who also responded to the scene. The fire was contained to the house and extinguished. Nagle contacted Emergency Management Coordina - tor Angela Hahn, who notified the Red Cross. Information was exchanged with the occupants for help. The fire may have started from an electrical short.

Roadwork Begins on Hwy. 159

The Texas Department of Transportation will be starting a project to rehabilitate the existing roadway on SH 159 from BS 71E to SH 237 on Monday, June 3, weather permitting. In order to replace several drainage structures, SH 159 will be closed intermittently over approximately six weeks beginning on Monday, June 3. The road closures will take place in between SH 71 and SH 237. Seven Texas counties have been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for grants for emergency work and replacement of disaster-damaged public infrastructure, after severe weather and flooding struck much of Deep East Texas, Gov. Gregg Abbott's office reported. Counties eligible for FEMA’s Public Assistance program include Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity and Walker.
