But complying hasn’t been easy and some institutions worry the law conflicts with certain requirements needed for them to receive federal funds.

EAGLE LAKE – Thanks to a $4,796 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority, the Eagle Lake Chamber of Commerce will begin work on a kitchen area and renovate the cramped restrooms in a popular community meeting space.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Duck Derby held May 18 was a quacky-good success providing entertainment for a cheering crowd at Beason’s Landing on the Colorado in Columbus. 3,000 rubber ducks were dropped from the bridge–all in unison– and floated to the finish line with a big boom containing the mass of yellow at the end of the derby.
CAT SPRING – The Cat Spring Agricultural Society will have a new space for community events and agricultural education, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.

BELLVILLE – The 2024 Annual Youth and Safety Day event was held May 21 at the Austin County Fairgrounds in Bellville and was a collaborative effort to address the safety concerns of youth. The support from the community was greatly appreciated and are already eagerly anticipating the next year’s event, where, once again, everyone can come together to promote child safety.
Schulenburg High School senior Meredith Magliolo recently made the 2023-2024 track & field 1-4A Legacy All-Star Selec tions list after another dominant season and not only making it to the state tournament, but medaling once again. The Texas Girls Coaches Association selects a minimum of 20 all-stars that are chosen by the TGCA Track Committee. The athletes must be seniors in order to make the team.
Flatonia sophomore Summer Sodek can do just about anything with a ball in her hand and she recently proved it by winning this year's STBA (Small Town Basketball Asso - ciation) Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year award. Sodek plays basketball, volleyball, and runs track at Flatonia and has put up dazzling numbers ever since she stepped foot on school grounds. Sodek averaged 24 points per game this season in basketball but is capable of recording 40 or 50 on any given night.
NEW ULM - The Weimar Vets traveled to New Ulm to take on the firemen for the first game of their community league 2024 opener. Kenny Goehring doubled in the second inning, driving in two runs to take the early lead. New Ulm countered with five runs to take the lead. The Vets tacked on a run in the third.
Cardinals baseball’s strong season came to a close last weekend as they were defeated by London High School in a three game series by a score of 13-4 in the first game and 3-0 in the second game.

The Weimar High School softball team’s season came to an end last week after a run for a repeat at the state title as they were defeated by Shiner High School May 22 and 23.
AUSTIN – Bulldogs baseball kept their season alive with an impressive win May 25 at Concordia University Baseball Field by sneaking past Johnson City High School with a final score of 2-1. Flatonia played nearly per- fect in the field with solid pitch - ing and fielding while producing a good amount at the dish.
