Mama collected the lunch plates and ran hot water in the sink. One basin was soapy and the other was clear for rinsing. Daddy stood me on a chair and it was my job to rinse and dry dishes while he washed. The rinse water was blistering hot and I grabbed at knives, forks, plates, and tea glasses so as not to burn my little fingers. The scalding water didn’t bother Dad as he chattered with Mama. I put the silverware and glass into the drying rack and Mama put everything into the cabinets. Daddy helped me lift the bigger pots and pans and I perched them on the edge of the drain board, dried them, and then handed them over to be put away. Meanwhile, our ranch hand, Garland Nelson, was lounging under a tree in the front yard.

This has been an interesting week for our family. Out at the ranch, we’ve been encountering snakes!

COLUMBUS – Leyco Real Estate was established in 1978 by Crockett Leyendecker. His wife, Dorothy, joined Crockett in the business in 1980. Crockett was a sixth generation Colorado County Rancher and a former County Commissioner. Dorothy was a past member of the Columbus City Council. In October 2017, the next generation of Leyendeckers took over in Crockett's granddaughter, Kimberly Johnson, and great-niece, Currie Luedecke.

SHERIDAN – Lucies Dog Project is a rescue, rehab, sanctuary and no-kill facility for dogs that assists Colorado and Lavaca County in sheltering canines that are in imminent danger of death. Lucies stands for Local Unity for Canines In Emergency Situations.

OAKRIDGE – he Oakridge Volunteer Fire Department took possession of a new 21,000-gallon water tank placed on their property on July 20 at the Oakridge Fire Station in Oakridge.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick last week issued a sweeping gag order ahead of the impeachment trial of suspended Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Houston Chronicle reported, saying “out-of-court statements” by both sides threaten to jeopardize the trial.

WEIMAR – Michelle Banse-Stokes and her dog, Texas, went through their paces on the obstacle course on July 21 at the Weimar gazebo in Weimar. Kids and adults lined up to watch the two perform as they do when they compete nationwide.
